Progesterone is a hormone which is very important in sustaining a pregnancy. The progesterone levels rise after ovulation, preparing the uterine lining for implanation. If a woman is not pregnant, the progesterone levels will fall just before mensuration. If a woman is pregnant, the progesterone levels should remain elevated inorder to have a healthy pregnancy. The Corpus Luteum is responsible for the production of Progesterone in the early stages until the placenta takes over the production by around 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Lack of progesterone can cause miscarriages & chemical pregnancies. Studies have shown that Low Progesterone can cause Ectopic Pregnancies & Preterm Labor. Inorder to find out if you have a progesterone deficiency, you need to get your progesterone blood levels monitored after ovulation, preferably every other day. If the levels are low, you need to take Progesterone Supplements. Many women who have had recurrent miscarriages have had successful pregnancies after progesterone supplementation.
These supplements can be in the form of oral capsules, vaginal suppositories or intra-muscular injections (Progesterone in Oil). Depending on how low the levels are, your doctor will recommend the appropriate dosage. The capsules are the least effective and the injections/shots are the most effective. The important thing is to supplement with progesterone soon after ovulation so that in case pregnancy occurs, the embryo can implant and grow. It is often too late to supplement progesterone if you wait till you find out you are pregnant.
Progesterone can also be used to lengthen your Luteal Phase. Some people have short luteal phases (less than 9 days) which can prevent implantation and thus result in difficulty while conceiving. Progesterone can be used for correcting Luteal Phase defects.
If you have had a miscarriage in the past, talk to your doctor about progesterone supplementation. It can do no harm to be cautious and start supplementing Progesterone. Some brand names of Progesterone are Prometrium, Crinone, Endometrin and so on.
